America’s Armed Forces are asked to perform at exceptionally high standards in the most demanding circumstances, and that service demands incredible sacrifice, dedication, and in some cases debilitating personal transformation. Transitioning to post-military life, whether wounded in combat or simply adjusting to the civilian sector, can often cause difficulty for the service member and his or her family. The unfortunate reality for many military families is that life changes after the service member returns home and the effects of their experiences begin to manifest in negative ways. In short, the normalcy of life prior to their service may have been lost forever.”[i]
Founded in 2011, Lone Survivor Foundation is doing an amazing job all around. They live their mission every day through hands-on support of veterans and bringing this important mission to the forefront. The organizational transparency is impressive. Financial statements are posted on their website (the link is on the footer of their homepage) including both the 990 and audited financial statements.
I’ve found not a hint of scandal or a negative word about the foundation – a rarity in this time of easy reporting. With six years of history, that speaks volumes.
Lone Survivor Foundation goes quietly about its work. Occasionally you will find an advert for a fundraiser, a word about a new facility they are building to house transitioning wounded veterans. But they do not flash their efforts or successes in wide distribution. The Board of Directors is loaded with some heavy hitters in the commercial world – and some not so heavy hitters who just have a heart for the mission.
I am impressed with Lone Survivor Foundation more than any non-profit organization I’ve experienced. I have no connection with this organization, other than my written review here (which was not submitted to them prior to publication). I find them to be heroes in their own right – fighting for those who need them most.
